The word ‘interaction’ is, like many other words used in the West, originally Latin. ‘Between’ is the English translation of the Latin ‘Inter,’ and ‘action’ refers to the Latin word ‘actio,’ which means movement or action. Turning to its Latin translations, the definition of ‘interaction’ can be explained quite well as a movement, action or influence that happens between persons or objects. Therefore, the synonym of interaction is interplay, an influence between two components. During an interplay or interaction the components are connected and through this connection they are influencing each other.
Communication and action are two essential elements of theatre. These elements are both based on interaction. The communication takes place in theatre with the audience, but also between performers and objects. These connections are based on interaction. So interaction makes connections arise, which makes communication possible. Also, an action arises through interaction because an action is based on interaction with space, persons, sounds, objects, light or the audience. In short, interaction makes action and communication possible in theatre.
Furthermore, theatre can be used as an interaction: this is what happens with interactive theatre. The difference between ‘traditional’ theatre and interactive theatre is the fourth wall, which doesn’t exist in interactive theatre. In interactive theatre there’s direct contact with audience. While the fourth wall is retained in ‘traditional’ theatre, so there’s only interaction on the stage. Interactive theatre is based on interaction with the public. This can be shaped in different forms. For example: ‘community theatre’ or ‘participatory theatre’

Het woord ‘interactie’ vindt, zoals veel Westerse woorden, zijn oorsprong in het Latijn. ‘Tussen’ is de Nederlandse vertaling voor de Latijnse ‘Inter’ en het woord ‘actie’ komt voor uit het Latijnse woord ‘actio’, wat beweging of handeling betekent. Door middel van de Latijnse vertalingen kan de definitie van het woord ‘interactie’ goed worden toegelicht. Het is namelijk een beweging, handeling of invloed die tussen personen of objecten plaatsvindt. Het synoniem voor interactie is daarom ook wel wisselwerking, een onderlinge invloed tussen twee componenten. Want door de wisselwerking of interactie zijn deze twee componenten met elkaar verbonden, waardoor de componenten invloed op elkaar hebben.
Communicatie en handelingen zijn essentiële elementen van het theater. Deze elementen zijn beide gebaseerd op interactie. Deze verbinding vindt in het theater plaats met het publiek, maar ook tussen performers en objecten. De communicatie is gebaseerd op interactie. Interactie zorgt dus voor een verbinding waaruit de mogelijkheid tot communiceren ontstaat. Ook een handeling ontstaat door interactie, want voor een handeling is er interactie nodig met de ruimte, personen, geluiden, objecten, licht of het publiek. Kortom: interactie is de basis van een handeling en communicatie en hiermee de basis van theater. Dus theater is een samenspel van interactie.
Verder kan theater ook worden ingezet als interactie, dit is wat bij gebeurt bij interactief theater. Het verschil tussen ‘traditioneel’ theater en interactief theater is dat bij interactief theater de vierde muur wordt doorbroken en er dus direct contact is met het publiek. Bij het traditionele theater wordt de vierde muur behouden en vind de interactie alleen plaats op het podium. Het interactief theater zorgt dus voor interactie met het publiek, deze interactie kan op veel verschillende manieren worden vormgegeven. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn: ‘community theatre’ of ‘particatory theatre’
